EASY AND AFFORDABLE FALL DECORATING IDEAS

There is something so magical about the Fall, when it feels like everything begins a new. The leaves are changing, there is a crispness in the air, and we begin to take everything indoors. Get your home ready for the season with Betsy’s favorite Fall decorating tips, which were also featured in Westchester Magazine. They’re quick, easy, and inexpensive ways to add a little autumnal touch.

Bring your patio furniture and accents indoors. At the end of each summer, we face the perennial question of what to do with our outdoor furniture. Most of the time it gets hidden away: maybe you get covers for the couches and tables; maybe you stash some of your items in a shed. But how about finding ways to repurpose some of them indoors? Outdoor pillows are great to have in a living room or basement. They’re more stain resistant and kid/pet friendly than their indoor-only counterparts. A garden stool is a perfect place to rest a drink or reading material in the den. And indoor/outdoor rugs have really come a long way in terms of design and plushness — bring yours into any high-traffic area, such as an entry or mudroom.

Wrap it in twine. A roll of twine is one of the most inexpensive ways to give your accents a rustic feel — perfect for achieving those fall vibes. Wrap twine around a glass votive holder. Make bows around your throw pillows. Collect leaves from your yard (or buy some from a craft store) and use the twine to make a garland. The options are endless!

Get out the chunky blankets. As soon as the temperatures start to dip, we bring out the extra blankets for maximum coziness. While we’re not generally fans of buying all new decor for each season — it’s much too expensive and time consuming to shop for all new accents every four months — investing in a new chunky throw blanket every September is a worthwhile indulgence (especially if you can get them on sale!). Our favorites are the oversized options at Pottery Barn. When you’re not all wrapped up in the blanket, drape it over the back of a side chair or sectional to add a little layered texture to your décor.

Galvanize your storage. You might associate galvanized tubs with bobbing for apples on a cool fall day, but there are so many more uses for this unsung hero. Place it by the sofa to store throw pillows when they’re not in use. Put them in the entryway to hold the day’s newspaper and magazines. Or use it to chill cider at your next gathering. Grab one for under $20 at Home Depot or World Market and let your imagination run wild.

Glam up your gourds. The markets are overflowing with the best of the fall harvest, and they make adorable decorative accents all on their own. But if you’re looking for more of an elegant look, pick up a can of metallic spray-paint or cover them in glitter. They’ll make great centerpieces for your dining room table or decorative vignettes in your living room or window.
